Indian Navy Receives Taragiri, Fourth Nilgiri-Class Frigate Under Project 17A

The Indian Navy has formally received Taragiri (Yard 12653) , the fourth frigate of the advanced Nilgiri-class under Project 17A , marking a major milestone in India’s indigenous warship-building programme. Delivered on 28 November 2025 , Taragiri is the third ship of the class constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) . The vessel also revives the heritage of the original INS Taragiri , a Leander-class frigate celebrated for three decades of distinguished service.

Enhanced Design and Stealth Features

Designed by the Warship Design Bureau , the Project 17A frigates represent a generational leap in stealth capabilities, automation and combat performance. Taragiri embodies reduced radar signature, improved survivability and digital integration—key components of India’s push toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat in naval platforms. The delivery timeline reflects the maturing efficiency of Indian shipyards, refining processes from earlier vessels to achieve faster construction cycles.

Propulsion and Integrated Systems

Taragiri is powered by a CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) propulsion system that pairs diesel engines with gas turbines operating controllable pitch propellers. Its Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) centralises control of propulsion, power, auxiliary systems and damage control, enabling higher operational readiness in multi-threat scenarios.

Advanced Weapons and Sensors

The frigate fields a sophisticated weapons suite, including BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles , the MFSTAR multifunction radar , the MRSAM air-defence system , a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount , close-in weapon systems, and anti-submarine rockets and torpedoes. Together, these systems equip Taragiri for potent combat performance across air, surface and underwater domains.
