India-Japan Joint Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN 2026 Begins

Ladakh Scouts and JGSDF Conduct DHARMA GUARDIAN in Uttarakhand

The 7th edition of the India–Japan Joint Military Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN commenced on 24 February 2026 at the Foreign Training Node, Chaubattia, Uttarakhand. Scheduled to run until 9 March 2026, the exercise continues to serve as a vital platform for strengthening bilateral defence cooperation. Conducted annually, the training engagement alternates between India and Japan, reflecting the expanding strategic partnership between the two nations.

Enhancing Operational Synergy

The exercise is designed to deepen interoperability and improve joint operational readiness, particularly in semi-urban environments. It emphasises tactical coordination, combined planning procedures and the exchange of operational best practices. The incorporation of contemporary military technologies and evolving combat doctrines highlights the shared focus on addressing emerging regional security challenges.

Participating Military Units

This year’s edition involves 120 personnel from each side. The Indian Army contingent is represented by the Ladakh Scouts , a specialised regiment recognised for expertise in high-altitude and extreme-weather warfare. The Japanese participation comes from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) , with troops drawn from the 32nd Infantry Regiment.

Over the course of the exercise, troops will engage in physical endurance training, synchronised operational planning and coordinated tactical drills aimed at fostering mutual confidence and operational cohesion.

Tactical and Advanced Drills

Core operational modules include the establishment of a Temporary Operating Base, development of an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) grid, deployment of Mobile Vehicle Check Posts, and execution of Cordon and Search Operations. Advanced combat simulations feature heliborne missions and house intervention exercises, replicating real-world counter-terrorism scenarios.
