• Purpose: To shine the light on the global activities in disaster risk reduction, disaster risk saving lives and minimizing economic and health losses associated with occurrence of natural hazards.

History

• It was founded in the first place by the UN General Assembly as the International Day of Reduction of Natural Disasters.
• On December 21, 2009, the UN renamed and corrected the celebration as the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13 annually.

Significance

• Praises the disaster preparedness and resilience.
• Encourages spending on risk mitigation as opposed to disaster recovery.
• Also urges countries to enhance infrastructure, planning and community education in an effort to reduce the effects of disasters in the future.
