History
- It was founded in the first place by the UN General Assembly as the International Day of Reduction of Natural Disasters.
- On December 21, 2009, the UN renamed and corrected the celebration as the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13 annually.
Significance
- Praises the disaster preparedness and resilience.
- Encourages spending on risk mitigation as opposed to disaster recovery.
- Also urges countries to enhance infrastructure, planning and community education in an effort to reduce the effects of disasters in the future.
