India Delivers First Local Anti-Submarine Ship mahe to Navy

  • Occurrence: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered the first of the eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC) to the Indian Navy which were made in India.
  • Ceremony: Signature between Dr S. Harikrishnan (CSL) and Commander Amit Chandra Choubey. Presided over by Rear Admiral R. Adhisrinivasan and senior naval officers.

Vessel Details:

  • Length: 78 metres; propulsion: diesel engine-waterjet.
  • Multi-mission: underwater surveillance, anti-submarine operations, search and rescue, mine-laying.
  • A certification: Compliant with the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) standards.
  • Local Content: Aatma Nirbhar Bharat initiative sources more than 90% of its components in India.

Exam-Oriented Facts:

  • The first eight ASW SWCs, constructed by CSL, are called mahe.
  • Biggest Indian naval vessel that is run on diesel-waterjet.
  • CSL is certified to ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 27001 standards.

Strategic Importance:

  • Increases the Indian shallow water combat and coastal defence forces.
  • Designed with a state-of-the-art sensors, sonar and communication packages.
  • Seven other vessels still being built to be delivered in the next few years.
