India Hosts 3rd IALA Council Session, Showcasing Leadership in Global Maritime Navigation

India inaugurated the 3rd Session of the Council of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) in Mumbai, marking a major step in the country’s expanding footprint in international maritime governance. The virtual opening ceremony, led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal , underscored India’s commitment to shaping global navigation standards and advancing safety across international waters.

Significance of Hosting the IALA Council

The gathering brought together delegates from 30+ countries , including 42 council members and several observers. Hosting this session not only reflects India’s growing maritime influence but also highlights its active contributions to IALA’s mission of harmonising marine aids to navigation worldwide. The event reinforces India’s leadership in promoting safe, efficient and environmentally responsible maritime operations.

Launch of Digital Lighthouse Tourism Portal

A major highlight was the launch of a digital ticketing portal covering 75 lighthouse destinations across India. Designed to promote transparency and seamless visitor experiences, the portal strengthens India’s ongoing push toward digital governance. With all Indian lighthouses now solar-powered , the initiative supports sustainable tourism and green infrastructure.

Focus on Maritime Technology and Global Cooperation

In his address, the Minister emphasised India’s maritime legacy and ongoing projects like the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal . He highlighted the rising importance of autonomous vessels, satellite-based navigation and digital ship management systems. India reiterated its support for IALA’s efforts to modernise and harmonise navigation standards globally.

India’s Long-Term Maritime Vision

The event aligns with national strategies such as Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 , both focused on modern ports, shipbuilding, logistics efficiency, green shipping and digitisation. India continues to invest in advanced aids-to-navigation, capacity-building and international cooperation to strengthen safe and smart maritime development.
