PM Lays foundation of Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project

1. Project Overview

  • Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project lays its foundation stone in Narendra Modi Banswara, Rajasthan.
  • This is a history project because it is the first nuclear power station in India that can be set up through a joint venture between two Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).

2. Putting Agency into effect and Significance.

  • Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and NTPC Limited are the JVs that will implement the project with the name Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI).
  • This model is a great change in the nuclear power industry of India, where the cooperation between the large public sector giants is encouraged.

3. Phasing and Technical Specifications.

  • Reactor Type: There are four indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) with a capacity of 700 MW.
  • Implementation Phases:
    • Phase 1: Mahi Banswara 1 & 2 (2x700 MW)
    • Phase 2: Mahi Banswara 3 & 4 (2x700 MW)
  • Total Capacity: 2800 MW.
  • Estimated Cost: Rs42,000 crore.

4. Strategic Importance

  • The project will be a significant move towards a self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) nuclear power capacity.
  • It will increase power production in Rajasthan, help India to transition to clean energy and enhance the strategic energy infrastructure of the country.
