India Launched the First Fleet of Electric Heavy Trucks at JNPA


1. Launch Event

  • Inaugurated by: Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
  • Place of location: Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal, Jawaharlal Nehmu Port Authority (JNPA).
  • Main Characteristic: The trucks have removable battery technology.

2. Strategic Importance

  • This is the biggest electric vehicle (EV) truck fleet that is in operation at any Indian port.
  • It is a big move towards sustainable logistics and decarbonization of port operations.
  • The project will be in line with national objectives, such as:
  • The net-zero by 2070 pledge by India.
  • The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP).
  • The PM Gati Shakti and National Logistics Policy (NLP).

3. Operational Producers and Objectives.

  • First Fleet: 50 EV trucks were flagged up.
  • Near-term Objective: To increase the fleet to 80 trucks by the year-end.
  • Long-term Goal: By December 2026, convert 90 percent of the internal heavy truck fleet of JNPA (estimated to be 600 vehicles).
  • The Infrastructure Support: An exclusive battery swapping station of heavy type also had to be commissioned.

4. Expected Benefits

  • Environmental: operation emissions, particulate pollution and noise are reduced significantly.
  • Economic & Operational: A solution to future cargo movement and a model that the existing Indian ports can copy.

5. Associated Development

  • JNPA and the Isaac Centre of Public Policy (ICPP) Ashoka University signed an MoU.
  • Purpose: To come up with a system in which the port authorities will calculate their tariffs based on cost and cargo benchmarking.
