New Education-Linked Savings Scheme Replaces Ladli Yojana
The Government of Delhi has introduced the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana , a targeted financial assistance programme for girls from economically weaker families. Scheduled to commence on April 1, the initiative aims to curb school dropouts driven by financial constraints while promoting long-term savings for educational advancement.
Scheme Design and Financial Structure
The programme provides cumulative deposits of ₹56,000 distributed across a girl’s academic journey. With interest accumulation, the corpus is projected to grow to approximately ₹1 lakh . Funds will be transferred directly into an Aadhaar-linked bank account opened in the beneficiary’s name, reinforcing transparency and efficiency through Direct Benefit Transfer mechanisms.
The matured amount becomes accessible upon turning 21 or completion of graduation/diploma , whichever occurs earlier. This design aligns financial incentives with educational continuity rather than immediate consumption.
Milestone-Based Deposits
The assistance follows a staggered deposit model:
-
₹11,000 at birth
-
₹5,000 at Class 1 admission
-
₹5,000 each at admissions to Classes 6, 9, 10, and 12
-
₹20,000 after graduation/diploma
Such phased payouts target educational transition stages where dropout probabilities historically increase.
Eligibility Framework
Benefits apply to girls born in Delhi, with families required to demonstrate three years of residency . Annual household income must not exceed ₹1 lakh , and coverage is restricted to two daughters per family . These criteria prioritise economically vulnerable households while controlling fiscal exposure.
Transition from Ladli Yojana
The scheme replaces the Ladli Yojana , which faced implementation challenges including documentation bottlenecks and unclaimed funds. Authorities have initiated drives to settle pending liabilities and streamline beneficiary identification.
