Vizhinjam Port to Begin Gateway Cargo Operations by January 2026

Vizhinjam Port Set to Begin Gateway Cargo Operations by January 2026

Gateway cargo operations at the Vizhinjam International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) are now expected to commence in January 2026 , following a short delay from the earlier November 2025 target. The updated schedule was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Customs, marking an important step in enhancing India’s maritime capacity and improving direct global shipping access from the southern coast.

Revised Timeline Due to Technical and Operational Issues

Officials explained that certain technical constraints pushed back the original launch date, necessitating additional preparations. Once the gates open, exporters and importers across South India will gain the ability to ship cargo through direct liner services to major international hubs. The operational shift is expected to improve transit reliability and reduce dependence on transhipment through foreign ports.

Boost to Regional Trade and Economic Growth

Industry representatives anticipate that Vizhinjam’s progress into its next phase will attract more direct vessel calls , lowering freight costs and shortening delivery timelines. The terminal’s activation is projected to generate wider economic gains—ranging from increased state revenue to substantial employment opportunities in logistics, transport and associated services.

Key Stakeholder Inputs and Customs Evaluation

During the meeting, participants requested that customs-cleared, seal-intact containers from Tuticorin, Kollam, Kottayam and nearby ICDs be permitted at Vizhinjam. Suggestions also included allowing bonded cargo movement and barge-based transfers from neighbouring ports. Customs officials confirmed that these proposals are under active consideration. Several scientific and medical institutions have already expressed interest in routing sensitive imports through the new terminal once operations begin.
