The third round of the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) is being considered under the Union Cabinet under the chair of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and this is a big boost to the promise of India to develop this field of research.
Implementation & Funding
- Implementing Agencies Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in collaboration with Wellcome Trust, UK, and India Alliance SPV
- Length of Program: 2025-26 2030-31 (also 6 more years until 2037-38 due to fellowship servicing)
- Total Investment: 1500 crore (DBT: 1000 crore; Wellcome Trust: 500 crore)

- Phase-I: rolled out 2008-09 and is concerned with fellowship programs.
- Phase-II: 2018-19 Expanded portfolio.
- Phase-III: Expansion with new partnership efforts.

- Early Career Research Fellowships and Intermediate Research Fellowships.
- Encouragement of research scholars.
- Essential, clinical and population health science coverage.
- Collaborative Grants Programme.
- Career Development Grants are provided to early-career scientists.
- Catalytic Mid-senior Researcher Collaborative Grants.
- Research Management Programme.
- Enhancing research support systems.
- Improving the administrative and technical structures.
This project is an important move towards capacity building of India in the field of state-of-the-art biomedical research and international scientific cooperation.
