India Set to Induct INS Aridhaman Nuclear Submarine
India is poised to take a major leap in strengthening its nuclear triad with the upcoming induction of INS Aridhaman , the country’s third indigenously developed nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). Having entered its final sea trials, the submarine is expected to join the Strategic Forces Command shortly, marking a historic boost to India’s sea-based deterrence capabilities.
Strengthening India’s Nuclear Triad
INS Aridhaman follows the induction of INS Arighaat , which officially joined service in August 2025. With three SSBNs soon operational simultaneously, India’s second-strike capability will gain unprecedented credibility. Built on an upgraded platform, Aridhaman features enhanced displacement and quieter operations, improving both stealth and survivability in deep-sea patrol missions.
Enhanced Missile and Strategic Capacity
The submarine is equipped to carry a higher number of long-range submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), including the K-4 nuclear-capable missile system . These upgrades place Aridhaman ahead of its predecessors, INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, in payload capacity and operational endurance. A fourth SSBN is already under construction, signalling India’s long-term commitment to a robust underwater nuclear force.
Expanding Naval Presence Across Regions
Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi highlighted India’s expanding maritime partnerships, referencing the Indian Ocean Ship Sagar mission involving nine regional navies, and the Africa-India Key Maritime Exercise conducted in Dar es Salaam. These initiatives reflect India’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean Region and Africa.
