By launching its first fully indigenous secure mobile communication system called SAMBHAV, India has made a significant breakthrough in the defence technology. The breakthrough was demonstrated in the course of the operation, Sindoor (2025), when SAMBHAV-enabled devices were deployed by the Army instead of the foreign applications, guaranteeing the encrypted and surveillance-free communication.
Operation Sindoor
In the process, the Army substituted overseas applications such as WhatsApp using M-Sigma application in SAMBHAV smartphones. This guaranteed confidentiality of sensitive command and control messages thus they would not be intercepted or hacked. The mission accentuated the effectiveness of the integration of indigenous technology and strategic planning.
What is SAMBHAV?
- Introduced in 2023 as an exclusive defence application.
- Supports real-time connections, which are 5G-enabled, and works even without commercial networks.
- Enforces multi-layered encryption to prevent Internet threats.
- M-Sigma enabled to share files and multimedia and exchange messages in a secure environment.
- Network-independent, which guarantees safe operations in infrastructures.
Development and Use
Samanthrana Technologies SAMBHAV is a collaboration between educational institutions and technology companies in India and is based on Aatmanirbhar Bharat and incorporates advanced encryption and resilient architecture. By the year 2024, more than 30,000 devices were issued to Army personnel to enable them to have secure border and diplomatic communications.
Impact and Significance
SAMBHAV is now able to win the battlefield communication, sensitive military discussions such as the one with China. It makes it less dependent on the foreign platforms, enhances the digital sovereignty, and improves the readiness to hybrid warfare. The claim of establishing communication channels enables SAMBHAV to improve the state of readiness in operations and emphasize the Indian commitment to independence in defence technology.
