Sonepur Airport to Feature 4,200-Metre Runway by 2030
The Bihar state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar , has approved the construction of a new international airport at Sonepur in Saran district. The proposed facility will include a 4,200-metre runway, enabling operations of wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A380. Scheduled for completion by 2030, the project is expected to significantly enhance aviation infrastructure in north Bihar.
Scale and Infrastructure Features
The airport is planned across 4,228 acres between Hajipur and Dumaria, making it the largest aviation facility in Bihar by land area. The extended runway length will allow efficient handling of large passenger aircraft and cargo carriers, supporting international-scale operations.
The Union civil aviation ministry had earlier granted site clearance, followed by in-principle approval from the Central Government. The project’s mention in the Union Budget reflects its broader national relevance. The state government has initiated land acquisition and earmarked ?1,302 crore for the process.
Regional Connectivity Impact
Officials view the Sonepur airport as a transformative project for Saran and adjoining districts. Improved air connectivity is expected to stimulate trade, tourism, logistics, and employment opportunities while easing pressure on existing facilities.
Bihar currently operates airports at Jayprakash Narayan International Airport , along with Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnia. Additional aviation expansion includes a new airport at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district and plans to upgrade Darbhanga airport to international status.
Additional Cabinet Approvals
The cabinet also sanctioned ?70 crore for anti-erosion measures along an embankment in Bhagalpur district. The allocation aims to strengthen flood-control infrastructure following breaches caused by recent flooding.
