In Part II of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council, India was re-elected at the 42 nd Assembly session in Montreal, Canada, in September 27, 2025. This group is a group of states that contribute the highest amount of money to international air navigation facilities.
Enhanced Global Standing
The votes gained by India exceeded the 2022 elections, which indicates the international trust in the leadership in the Indian aviation sphere. The ministry of civil aviation and ministry of external affairs were able to campaign the position such as hosting a diplomatic reception in New Delhi on the 2 nd of September 2025.
Historical Partnership
India is a founding society member of ICAO as it has been part of it since 1944. The country is a participant in:
- Policy formulation in the global aviation.
- Setting up of regulatory frameworks.
- Implementation of international standards.
- Safe, secure and sustainable aviation promotion.
Governance Structure
The ICAO Assembly, which is made up of 193 member states, is triannual and elects the governing council of 36 members on three year terms.
Strategic Commitments (2025-2028)
The new term of India is based on:
- Enhance the aviation security and safety.
- Ensuring sustainability of the environment.
- Further promotion of fair air connectivity.
- Investing in technology.
- Adopting the ICAO initiative of No country left behind.
This re-election confirms India as playing a major role in the development of global standards in aviation and the need to establish an inclusive and sustainable air transport system across the world.
