China has also in principle agreed to revive the historic Shipki-La trade route, in Himachal Pradesh. It will be a welcome move in India-China relations as the decision was made following negotiations held between the two nations as Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi paid an official visit to India. The relocation is one of the continued acts to restart the trading activities at all the three agreed borders.
Diplomatic Push
The renovation has been made after active initiatives by the government of Himachal Pradesh that persuaded the Union government to restore this traditional Indo Tibetan trade route. Official talks resulted in China agreeing in principle to restart trade across the pass, which had been closed in 2020 because of the pandemic.
Wider Trade and a Pilgrimage Programme
India is also trying to reopen the Lipulekh passes (Uttarakhand) and Nathu La pass (Sikkim). Other than trade, Shipki-La is also being looked to as an alternate route to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra since it will provide a shorter way and better road connectivity in Tibet.
Next Steps
Himachal Pradesh has new work cut out to double up with the Union Commerce Ministry to formalize procedures and create infrastructure which will facilitate the renewed trade and pilgrimage activities. This reopening will improve the local economies and cross-border relations.
