BSNL Launches Nationwide VoWiFi Service Across India

BSNL Rolls Out VoWiFi Nationwide

On New Year’s Day, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) , also known as Wi-Fi Calling. The service has been activated across all telecom circles, marking a major step in BSNL’s efforts to strengthen voice connectivity in both urban and hard-to-reach regions of India.

What Is VoWiFi and How It Functions

VoWiFi enables users to make and receive voice calls and SMS using a Wi-Fi network rather than depending entirely on cellular signal strength. Importantly, calls are routed through the user’s existing mobile number and default phone dialler, without requiring any third-party apps. The technology is built on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture, allowing seamless switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks without call drops.

Benefits for Rural and Indoor Coverage

The service is especially beneficial in areas where mobile signals are weak or inconsistent, such as remote villages, hilly terrain, basements, and densely constructed buildings. As long as a stable Wi-Fi connection is available—whether through BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband providers—users can access clear voice services. VoWiFi also reduces congestion on cellular networks by offloading voice traffic onto Wi-Fi infrastructure.

Pricing, Access and Device Compatibility

BSNL has made VoWiFi available free of cost , with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calling. Most modern smartphones support the feature, which can be activated by enabling the “Wi-Fi Calling” option in handset settings. Customers may seek assistance from BSNL service centres or via the helpline.
