AI-Based Monsoon Forecasting Pilot Helps Farmers Plan for Kharif 2025

India has launched an advanced AI-driven initiative to improve monsoon onset predictions, offering farmers more accurate information for sowing and land preparation ahead of the Kharif 2025 season. Implemented with support from the Development Innovation Lab–India, the pilot marks a significant step toward integrating cutting-edge technology into agricultural planning.

Blended AI Model Enhances Local Prediction Accuracy

The forecasting system utilised a blended artificial intelligence model, merging Google’s NeuralGCM, ECMWF’s Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System (AIFS) and more than 125 years of historical rainfall records from the India Meteorological Department. This hybrid approach enabled the generation of probabilistic, location-specific monsoon onset estimates—critical data for determining the safest and most profitable sowing windows.

Mass Dissemination via the M-Kisan Platform

To ensure last-mile delivery, the government transmitted these forecasts through the M-Kisan portal, reaching 3.88 crore farmers across 13 major agricultural states. Alerts were sent in five regional languages—Hindi, Odia, Marathi, Bangla and Punjabi—to maximise comprehension and usability. The pilot focused solely on advisory communication and did not include any monetary assistance.

Measurable Impact on Farmer Decision-Making

Follow-up surveys conducted through Kisan Call Centres in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar revealed significant behavioural responses. Between 31% and 52% of farmers adjusted their farming activities after receiving the forecasts, including changes in land preparation, crop selection, sowing dates and input planning. The findings underscore the potential of AI-based advisories to reduce climate-related risks.
