The city of Lakes, Udaipur has recently been recognised as the Ramsar Wetland City in 2025, and now it has become one of the few urban cities in the world that was awarded the Ramsar Wetland City recognition due to its remarkable effort in conserving and sustainably managing the wetlands. This award was given in the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Awards and Wetland Cities Recognition Ceremony, held by the ministry of environment. This award is an indicator of the sustained attempts of Udaipur to conserve the local ecosystem of lakes and urban wetlands.
Importance of Wetlands
Wetlands are commonly referred to as the kidneys of the environment because they play important roles in the environment. They have the natural characteristics of filtering pollutants, re-groundwater, controlling floods, and hosting a large range of flora and fauna. Wetlands also have economic and cultural importance to local communities, with fisheries, eco-tourism, and traditional activities being supported by them. Wetland conservation is important in the fast growing urban areas to ensure the development is balanced with sustainability.
Ramsar Accreditation Criteria.
The Ramsar accreditation is awarded to cities with excellent wetland conservation policies, community involvement, inclusion of wetlands in urban planning and promoting sustainable livelihood. The city of Udaipur has been doing well in all these aspects by developing long term lake restoration programmes, citizen and non governmental organization participation and eco tourism programmes that guarantee conservation and economic prospects.
Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2025
In conjunction with the fame of Udaipur, Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Awards were used to rank 130 cities in the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Eleven cities were recognised on the basis of their actions in boosting their sustainability and cutting down on pollution. Indore was the leader with 200 points, and Jabalpur, Agra, Surat, Amravati, and Dewas were not far behind. These prizes motivate cities to pursue new actions in terms of green mobility, waste management and monitoring of air quality.
The Wetland and Clean Air Programs in India.
In India there are now 91 Ramsar sites, with an area of 1.36 million hectares, the largest in Asia and the third largest worldwide. The government is marshalling [?]1.55 lakh crore towards clean air and conservation programs such as EV adoption, afforestation, waste-to-energy programs. The events such as Mission Amrit Sarovar and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam also help in making the community more active in the renovations of water bodies and greenery.
An Urban Sustainability Model.
The reputation of Udaipur shows how community conservation, environmental tourism and intelligent urban development can collaborate to conserve natural ecosystems. This model of the city emphasises how heritage, culture and modern sustainability can co-exist and this can be emulated by other Indian cities.
