Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 128th episode of Mann Ki Baat , announced that India has successfully doubled its annual honey production to over 1.5 lakh metric tonnes , while honey exports have also tripled in recent years. He attributed this growth to community-driven initiatives, improved processing infrastructure and the preservation of traditional beekeeping practices across the country.

Regional Growth in Honey Production

A key highlight was Ramban Sulai honey , a speciality from Jammu and Kashmir produced from wild basil ( tulsi ) and recently granted Geographical Indication (GI) status . The recognition is expected to boost the product’s market value and support local beekeepers. In Karnataka, the farmers' collective Gramjanya has established a state-of-the-art processing and traceability facility that supports more than 2,500 beekeepers . Similarly, the Shivganga Kalanjiya initiative in Tumkuru provides bee boxes and community extraction centres, improving income stability for rural producers.

Traditional Beekeeping Practices in the Northeast

The Prime Minister also highlighted the Khiamni-Yangan tribe of Nagaland , known for their cliff-honey harvesting tradition. This complex and centuries-old practice not only preserves indigenous knowledge but also contributes to India’s diverse honey varieties and ecological sustainability.

Surge in Output and Rural Employment

India’s honey output has risen from 76,000 metric tonnes to over 1.5 lakh MT in the past eleven years. Through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s Honey Mission , more than 2.25 lakh bee boxes have been distributed, generating employment and expanding the apiculture ecosystem.
