Indian Navy to Commission Indigenous Diving Support Craft DSC A20

Indian Navy to Induct DSC A20, Strengthening Indigenous Underwater Operations

The Indian Navy is set to commission DSC A20 , the first vessel of the indigenously designed Diving Support Craft (DSC) series, at Kochi on 16 December 2025 . The induction under the Southern Naval Command represents a significant enhancement of the Navy’s underwater operational capability and reflects steady progress toward maritime self-reliance.

Indigenous Design and Construction

DSC A20 is the lead ship in a five-vessel series being constructed by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited , Kolkata. The craft has been specifically designed to support diving and underwater missions in coastal and near-shore waters. Built in compliance with Indian Naval Rules and Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) standards, the platform underwent extensive hydrodynamic and performance testing at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam .

Advanced Technical Capabilities

The vessel is equipped with modern diving systems to support underwater inspection, salvage operations, repair and maintenance tasks . Its catamaran hull form provides superior stability, improved manoeuvrability and a larger working deck—critical for safe and sustained diving operations. With a displacement of approximately 390 tonnes , DSC A20 is capable of operating effectively across a range of sea states and mission profiles.

Boost to Aatmanirbharta in Defence

The commissioning of DSC A20 underscores the success of the Make in India initiative in defence shipbuilding. The project demonstrates effective collaboration between the Indian Navy, domestic shipyards and national research institutions, highlighting India’s growing expertise in developing specialised naval platforms .

Operational Role and Strategic Value

Once inducted, DSC A20 will be based at Kochi , supporting underwater missions along India’s coastline. Its induction will significantly strengthen the Navy’s underwater support infrastructure and improve readiness for littoral and coastal operations .
