Albert Ekka Brigade Marks 56th Raising Day at Agartala Military Station

Ceremonial Observance at Agartala

The Albert Ekka Brigade , a distinguished formation of the Indian Army , observed its 56th Raising Day at the Agartala Military Station with full military solemnity. The occasion commemorated the brigade’s formation, its operational achievements, and its enduring contribution to national security, particularly during the 1971 India–Pakistan War from the Tripura sector.

Honouring the Fallen

The observance began with a wreath-laying ceremony to honour soldiers who laid down their lives in service of the nation. Senior officers, junior commissioned officers, other ranks, and civil dignitaries paid homage to the fallen. The ceremony reaffirmed the brigade’s core values of sacrifice, duty and honour, which continue to guide its operational ethos.

Role in the 1971 War

The brigade holds a unique place in military history for its decisive role during Operation Cactus Lily on the eastern front of the 1971 war. Operating from the Agartala sector, it played a critical part in the Battle of Gangasagar, contributing significantly to India’s victory that ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh.

Legacy of Lance Naik Albert Ekka

The brigade is named after Albert Ekka , a soldier of the 14 Guards who displayed extraordinary bravery while neutralising an enemy bunker posing a grave threat near Agartala. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra , India’s highest wartime gallantry award, for his act of supreme sacrifice.

Continuing Operational Excellence

Addressing the troops, Brigadier Dheeraj Singh highlighted the brigade’s professionalism, combat readiness, and legacy of excellence. Military historians note that the 1971 operations, including Operation Nut Cracker , culminated in the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops on 16 December 1971, a defining moment in South Asian history.
