Indian Army Transformation Decade of Transformation (2023–2032)

  • The Indian Army has launched a major restructuring and modernization drive titled ‘Decade of Transformation (2023–2032)’ , announced by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Vijay Diwas, 26 July 2025 .

  • The initiative focuses on creating a more agile, tech-driven, and integrated force , marking the Army’s biggest structural reform in decades.

​​​​​​ New Combat Formations Introduced:

  • Rudra Brigades: Integrated all-arms formations combining infantry, armour, and artillery. Designed for independent, network-centric operations with UAVs, loitering munitions, and advanced artillery. Two brigades operational by mid-2025.

  • Bhairav Battalions: Compact, high-impact special operations units (approx. 250 personnel) designed for rapid strikes, border raids, and counter-insurgency missions. Equipped with drones, lightweight weapon systems, and precision missiles. Five battalions under training; twenty-five to be active by early 2026.

  • Shaktibaan Units: Drone-exclusive artillery regiments conducting “see-and-strike” missions using precision-guided UAVs. Represent a shift toward autonomous warfare.

  • Divyastra Batteries: Hybrid artillery formations combining traditional guns with drones and loitering munitions for long-range precision and surveillance. Five regiments to include Divyastra Batteries in the first phase.

Key Objectives:

  • Integrate AI, autonomous systems, and electronic warfare tools for faster decision-making and situational awareness.

  • Promote Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence through partnerships with domestic firms and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) .

  • Strengthen India’s deterrence and readiness for multi-domain warfare , including land, air, cyber, and space operations.

Strategic Impact:

  • Enhances India’s operational flexibility along sensitive borders and conflict zones.

  • Builds a future-ready, technology-driven force capable of tackling both conventional and asymmetric threats.

  • Reinforces India’s regional power projection and commitment to self-reliant defence innovation.
