Varanasi to Host 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship in January

Varanasi Enters India’s National Sports Calendar

Varanasi is set to achieve a significant sporting milestone as it hosts the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship for men and women from January 4 to 11 . The prestigious national tournament will be held at the Dr Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra , marking the first time a championship of this scale is organised in the Purvanchal region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The event aligns with the broader objectives of the Khelo India initiative , which aims to strengthen grassroots and competitive sports across the country.

National-Level Competition in Eastern Uttar Pradesh

According to organisers, the championship will feature 73 teams from across India, spanning both men’s and women’s categories. Over 1,000 players are expected to participate, making it one of the largest volleyball events hosted in the region. The tournament is expected to raise the standard of sports administration and infrastructure in Varanasi, while placing the city firmly on India’s national sporting map.

Prime Minister’s Encouragement and State Support

The organising committee, headed by Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak , who is also the president of the state volleyball association, recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally invite him to the event. The Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes and described the championship as a source of inspiration for the youth, highlighting the role of sports in discipline, teamwork and nation-building.

Culture, Fair Play and Event Identity

Reflecting Varanasi’s cultural heritage, two mascots have been introduced. ‘Nandu’ , inspired by Nandi , symbolises strength and tradition, while ‘Neera’ , based on the endangered Ganga river dolphin , highlights environmental awareness. Organisers have also planned random anti-doping tests to ensure fairness and transparency during the tournament.

Impact on Youth and Regional Sports

By hosting a national-level championship, Varanasi is emerging as a hub for organised sports in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The event is expected to motivate young athletes, strengthen local sporting culture, and complement the city’s spiritual identity with a growing reputation in competitive athletics.
