HAL to Supply Eight Dornier 228 Aircraft to Coast Guard
The Ministry of Defence has signed a Rs 2,312 crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of eight Dornier 228 aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The acquisition, executed under the “Buy (Indian)” category, highlights India’s continued emphasis on indigenous defence manufacturing.
Enhancing Maritime Surveillance
The contract includes eight Dornier 228 aircraft fitted with mission-specific operational role equipment. These platforms are designed to strengthen coastal surveillance, maritime reconnaissance, pollution monitoring, and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions. Given India’s extensive coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), such aerial assets are critical for maritime domain awareness.
Dornier 228: Operational Versatility
The Dornier 228 is a twin-turboprop, short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft optimised for maritime patrol and utility operations. Its ability to operate from short runways makes it particularly suitable for island territories and remote coastal bases.
Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat
Procurement under the “Buy (Indian)” category prioritises domestic production, reducing dependence on foreign imports. HAL’s execution of the programme is expected to stimulate India’s aerospace ecosystem, including MSMEs and component suppliers. Defence manufacturing contracts also generate high-skilled employment and strengthen technological capabilities.
Strategic Significance
The Indian Coast Guard plays a pivotal role in maritime law enforcement, anti-smuggling operations, environmental protection, and disaster response. Fleet expansion enhances operational reach and response efficiency.
