India has also opened up the Vikram 3201 which is its first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor which will be used in space missions. The processor was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in partnership with the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) , Chandigarh , and is another significant addition to becoming self-reliant in high-end semiconductor technology.
Vikram 3201 Microprocessor
The first chip to be fabricated at this advanced scale to be used as avionics on launch vehicles is the Vikram 3201, a space grade chip which was designed to send to rockets and satellites and is the first microprocessor to be built in India. It is also designed to work in severe conditions such as high radiation, large temperature ranges and vibration (unlike consumer chips). It is the follow-up to Vikram 1601 , a 16-bit processor, launched in 2009.
Key Features and Upgrades
- The 32 bit architecture that supports the 64-bit floating-point calculations to provide precise trajectory and guidance.
- Mission-critical systems Ada programming language compatibility is popular in aerospace.
- On-chip 1553B bus interfaces to provide effective communication with avionics modules.
- Manufactured on CMOS technology with a balance in reliability and performance at 180 nanometres .
Testing and Validation
The processor was successfully flight-tested on PSLV-C60 during the POEM-4mission, and it operated the Mission Management Computer. Its strong operation in space affirmed it to be operationally ready. The initial units of production were shipped to ISRO in early 2025 to be integrated into future missions.
Strategic Significance
Space processors are required to withstand harsh conditions unavailable to normal chips. So far, India had depended on imported processors when it comes to critical missions. The Vikram 3201 will decrease this reliance and enhance strategic independence and the Atmanirbhar Bharat project to build local semiconductor capacity.
Supporting Ecosystem
ISRO has also created a full software ecosystem of Vikram 3201 , such as compilers, linkers, assemblers, simulators and IDEs. A C compiler is being developed to increase flexibility of programming. In addition to this, other indigenous avionics products which have been introduced by ISRO are Reconfigurable Data Acquisition Systems, Relay Driver ICs, Low Drop-out Regulator ICs.
India's Semiconductor Drive
This processor was introduced at Semicon India 2025 , one of the major industry conferences. India which is already a chip design center is also concentrating on manufacturing. Five semiconductor fabrication facilities are established by government through Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) to enhance local manufacturing and develop a full scale supply chain.
Conclusion
The Vikram 3201 is a technologic leap in the Indian space programme. It does not only increase the reliability of its missions by decreasing dependence on imported technology but also makes India a more competitive force in the worldwide semiconductor and space system.
