Gandhi Jayanti and International Day of Non-Violence 2025

1. Global Observance

  • Worldwide, the 2 nd of October is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.
  • This was announced by UN General Assembly in June 2007.
  • Offering of tributes at Raj Ghad (India) and through world wide events such as those in USA, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand and Netherlands.

2. Philosophical Legacy

  • In South Africa struggles (1893+), Gandhi came up with the term satyagraha.
  • Fuses truth (satya) and insistence (agraha)
  • Indeed, the visionary world leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. were inspired.
  • Actions of non-violence proven as revolutionary method of justice.

3. Modern Applications

  • UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute works towards Education of Human Flourishing.
  • The Gandhi hologram technology was featured in Fifth Ahimsa Lecture (2022).

4. Government Programmes based on Gandhian principles.

Swachh Bharat Mission

  • India was declared Open Defecation Free on the 2 nd of October 2019.
  • 12 crore+ toilets established, 5.66 lakh ODF + villages.

Rural Empowerment

  • 10.05 crore women in 90.90 lakh SHGs
  • Rs11.10 lakh crore loans disbursed (DAY-NRLM)

Property Rights

  • SVAMITVA Scheme: 65 lakh or more property cards were given out.
  • 3.2 lakh villages were drone-surveyed.

Khadi Revival

  • Production was 4-fold, sales 5-fold.
  • 1.94 crore employed (FY 2024-25)

Tribal Development

  • PM Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan: Rs79,156 crore expenditure.
  • In 63,000 villages, which benefit 5 crore tribal citizens.

Employment Guarantee

  • MGNREGA: 3.83 crore households given work (FY 2025- 26)
  • 106.77 crore person-days generated
