- A seven-month fishing ban has been enforced in the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary of Kendrapada district, Odisha , from November 1 to May 31 to protect the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles during their annual mating and nesting season . The sanctuary, known for its rich marine biodiversity, is one of the most important nesting sites for Olive Ridleys in the world.

Conservation Measures and Patrolling
To ensure effective protection, the forest department has set up 14 turtle protection camps , including four offshore camps at Madali, Sasanipada, Ekakula, and Babubali islands .

Marine police from Jamboo, Talachua, and Tantiapala and the Coast Guard (Paradip) are assisting in enforcement.

Safe Nesting and Hatchling Efforts
Forest officials stated that the turtles begin arriving in November for mating, while egg-laying occurs around March . To prevent accidental deaths, trawlers must use Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) —special nets that allow trapped turtles to escape.
Additionally, 14 buoys have been placed to mark sanctuary boundaries and aid navigation and monitoring.
