The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) has appointed senior IRS officer Vivek Chaturvedi as its next Chairman, marking a key leadership transition in India’s indirect tax administration. The announcement received formal approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and comes at a time when reforms in GST, customs modernisation and compliance enhancement are gaining momentum nationwide.

Leadership Transition and Institutional Stability

Chaturvedi assumes charge from Sanjay Agrawal , who superannuates on 30 November 2025 . His succession ensures continuity in revenue policy execution while supporting upcoming structural reforms in indirect taxation. Belonging to the 1990 batch of IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) , he brings over three decades of administrative and enforcement expertise to the role.


Career Profile and Earlier Responsibilities

Prior to this appointment, Chaturvedi served as Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer, CBIC , where he contributed to strengthening internal accountability systems. He previously held the position of Member (Tax Policy & Legal) , taking charge after the completion of Vivek Ranjan’s term in August 2025. His professional track record includes roles across GST, customs enforcement, policy drafting and grievance oversight.


Role of the Appointments Committee

The ACC — chaired by the Prime Minister — approved Chaturvedi’s elevation based on recommendations from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) . The committee oversees top-bureaucrat appointments across critical ministries to maintain administrative continuity and policy alignment.
