IIT Bombay Unveils India’s First Academia-Linked Deep Tech VC Fund

India has marked a major milestone in its deep tech innovation journey with IIT Bombay launching the country’s first academia-backed deep tech venture capital fund. The Rs 250-crore initiative is set to fast-track the commercialisation of advanced research, bridging the gap between laboratory innovation and market-ready products.

Launch of the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund

The Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), IIT Bombay’s premier technology incubator, has introduced the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund—India’s first VC fund to be managed by an academic incubator. The fund will focus on providing early-stage capital, mentorship, and market linkages to startups operating in high-risk, high-impact technology domains.

Strategic Focus Areas

The fund targets frontier sectors critical to national growth, including Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Computing, Nuclear and Space Technologies, Advanced Materials, Climate and CleanTech, Advanced Manufacturing, and Life Sciences. By combining IIT Bombay’s research infrastructure with venture support, the fund aims to nurture globally scalable, IP-led startups.

Strategy Plan 2026–2030

Aligned with IIT Bombay’s new Strategy Plan, the institute aims to elevate learning-centric education, expand international academic collaborations, and advance digital learning initiatives through online degrees and certificate programmes. The plan places strong emphasis on innovation-driven research translation.
