Missile Scientist Tessy Thomas Receives Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios Award 2025

Tessy Thomas Awarded Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios Award 2025 for Excellence in Missile Science

Renowned aerospace scientist Dr Tessy Thomas , fondly recognised as India’s Missile Woman , has been conferred the Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios Award 2025 , acknowledging her groundbreaking leadership in India’s missile development programmes. The award celebrates her role in strengthening indigenous defence technology and inspiring the next generation of women scientists.

Early Curiosity That Sparked a Scientific Career

Born in Alappuzha, Kerala, Thomas was drawn to science from childhood—fascinated by the Moon’s motion, aircraft streaks in the sky and the excitement of engineering. These early sparks gradually evolved into academic pursuit, leading her into aerospace studies and later into India’s missile research ecosystem.

Leadership in Agni Missile Programme and DRDO

Dr Thomas’ entry into India’s defence establishment marked a pioneering moment, as she trained under Dr APJ Abdul Kalam , who later mentored her through advanced missile projects. Her trailblazing achievements include becoming the first woman to lead a missile project in India , playing a defining role in the Agni-IV and Agni-V systems. Her research focus strengthened long-range strategic deterrence, elevating India’s global defence standing.

National and International Recognition

Prior honours such as the Aerospace Pioneer Hall of Fame and national scientific awards reflect her long-standing contributions. The Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios Award (presented biennially by the Sophia Society) now adds another milestone, recognising her commitment to scientific innovation, leadership and defence technology excellence.
