Assam Introduces Dedicated Welfare Scheme for Udasin Bhakats

The Assam government has rolled out a dedicated welfare initiative for Udasin Bhakats —celibate monks residing in the state’s historic satras. The scheme was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a step towards recognising monks who have devoted their lives to preserving Assam’s Vaishnavite spiritual and cultural traditions.

Under this initiative, each eligible Udasin Bhakat will receive a monthly financial assistance of ₹1,500. As per official estimates, nearly 620 monks living across recognised satras are expected to benefit. The assistance is intended to help meet basic personal needs and provide financial security to monks who traditionally depend on community offerings and minimal institutional resources.

Satras and Their Cultural Significance

Satras are Vaishnavite monasteries that emerged as centres of religious practice, education, art, and social reform. Rooted in the Ekasarana tradition, they have played a crucial role in shaping Assam’s cultural and spiritual identity for centuries. The government has described the scheme as an acknowledgement of the enduring contribution of Udasin Bhakats in safeguarding spiritual values, classical art forms, and community traditions linked to the satra system.

Government’s Vision Behind the Scheme

While announcing the initiative, Sarma termed it a tribute to monks who dedicate their entire lives to bhakti and service. He noted that the move seeks to address long-standing neglect and extend dignity and recognition to these spiritual custodians. The Chief Minister also linked the decision to the broader vision of protecting Assam’s “jati, mati, bheti” — identity, land, and homeland.
