- The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) , both under TIFR , have launched the Centre for Artificial Learning and Intelligence for Biological Research and Education (CALIBRE) in Bengaluru . The initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) with biological research to address India’s scientific, environmental, and healthcare challenges.
Key Highlights
-
CALIBRE is funded with Rs 25 crore from Vishal Gupta and Deepshikha Gupta of Reed India Consulting LLP .
-
It will serve as a national platform for AI-led biological innovation, developing tools, datasets, and frameworks suited to India’s biodiversity, healthcare, and agriculture.
-
The centre will operate from NCBS , in collaboration with ICTS , combining expertise in life sciences , theoretical research , and data science .
Focus Areas
- CALIBRE will promote research, education, and innovation , offering Chair Professorships and Research Travel Fellowships to support interdisciplinary work. It aims to train a new generation of scientists skilled in both biology and AI .
Leadership Vision
- NCBS Director Prof. LS Shashidhara stated that CALIBRE will help apply AI in health, agriculture, and ecology , while ICTS Director Prof. Rajesh Gopakumar emphasized its role in advancing quantitative biology, biophysics, and epidemiology .
- By bridging biology and AI, CALIBRE positions India to become a global leader in AI-driven biological research .
