Uttar Pradesh Crosses 1 GW Rooftop Solar Capacity Under PM Surya Ghar
Uttar Pradesh has made a major leap in decentralised clean energy by crossing 1 gigawatt of residential rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana , emerging as the third state in India to surpass this mark after Gujarat and Maharashtra. The achievement highlights accelerating adoption of home-based solar power and reflects strong consumer response to government subsidy incentives.
Growth Led by Rapid Installations Across Districts
As of the latest update, rooftop solar systems have been installed on 2.90 lakh households , generating a total capacity of 1,003.64 MW . Nearly 2.93 lakh families are now receiving reduced-cost or free electricity under the scheme. The state’s performance has been especially notable in FY25, where Uttar Pradesh alone added around 640 MW , one of the fastest expansions in the country.
Subsidy Structure Reduces Payback to 20 Months
The state has received over 9.7 lakh consumer applications , supported by ₹1,999 crore in central subsidy and ₹600 crore from the state government . Consumers receive ₹15,000 per kW up to 2 kW , and ₹1.08 lakh subsidy for 3 kW systems , reducing the payback period to just 20 months —far below the national average of 30 months , and dramatically quicker compared to 54 months without subsidy support .
Economic & Environmental Impact
The expansion has reduced land requirement for electricity generation, saving nearly 4,000 acres . Households now enjoy up to 300 free units per month , reducing electricity bills by ₹800–1,500 in rural homes and ₹1,500–2,500 in urban areas . The transition has also boosted daytime power availability for farming and strengthened micro-business operations.
