BSL Signs Technology Transfer Agreement With DRDO for Military-Grade Steel Production

Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) has signed a major technology transfer agreement with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) under DRDO, enabling the PSU to manufacture specialised military-grade steel sheets at scale. The collaboration strengthens India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and supports the nation’s push for self-reliance in critical defence materials.

Advanced Technology for Defence-Use Steel

Under this licensing agreement, BSL gains access to the approved technology for producing DMR 249A , a high-performance steel grade designed for demanding military applications. The steel offers exceptional strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for both naval platforms and land-based combat systems. The move will ensure a steady, indigenous supply of strategic materials for defence projects.

Boosting Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

Executives from BSL have emphasised that the partnership aligns with national priorities under Aatmanirbhar Bharat and serves the evolving needs of the armed forces. The PSU plans to further enhance its portfolio of specialised steels to support future requirements of defence agencies, shipbuilders, and strategic sectors.

Critical Steel for Indian Naval Fleet

DMR 249A has been co-developed by BSL and DMRL since 2007 and has already been deployed in key naval assets such as aircraft carriers, stealth frigates, advanced corvettes, and next-generation warships. To date, more than 46,500 tonnes of this grade have been produced, contributing significantly to India's naval modernisation.

Strengthening India’s Material Self-Reliance

The agreement, signed in Hyderabad, represents a strategic step towards self-sufficiency in defence metals. By bolstering domestic capability in high-performance materials, it supports long-term defence preparedness and reduces dependence on imported military alloys.
