Historic Indian Pro-Palestinian politics.
India has been a major player in advocating the Palestinian statehood in the international arena. It was one of the first non-Arab states to acknowledge the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), and then officially the State of Palestine in 1988. Such actions were typical of the anti-colonial spirit of India and the strong ideology of its adherence to the principle of self-determination. Over the decades, India has been a steadfast supporter of UN resolutions protecting the rights of Palestinians, opposed settlement in Israel, and provided humanitarian and educational assistance to Palestinians.
A Balancing Act with Israel
India has also developed good relationships with Israel especially in defence, agriculture and technology even as it supports Palestine. The two directions present the two state solution policy of India, which calls upon peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine. India has been taking global platforms such as the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to demand dialogue, peace and respect of international law. This balancing exercise is an indication of how India was trying to balance ethical responsibility with strategic interests.
Difficulties In the 2023 War.
The violent and dramatic event in 2023 challenged the diplomacy of India. Attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians were countered by an intense Israeli military retaliation that claimed the lives of more than 55,000 Palestinian civilians including children. The infrastructure and economy of Gaza were destroyed on a grand scale and humanitarian aid was severely limited. India responded in a soft manner with minimal outright condemnation, and a debate has arisen as to whether India had left its conservative morality behind.
Criticism and Ethical responsibility.
Opponents believe that the improved relationship between India and Israel has shadowed its traditional ally towards Palestine. The recent exchanges with Israeli leaders, even in high levels, have been scrutinized with some claiming that India has been practising personalised diplomacy at the expense of principle. The silence in India by many of us is a subversion of the constitutional principles and its history of speaking out on behalf of the oppressed in the world.
The Road Ahead
The history of colonial struggle of India gives it a sense of moral obligation to support Palestine. The leadership of India will be judged on its consistency as the calls of justice keep rising globally, as it continues to be advocating human rights and dignity, at the same time, engaging in realistic diplomacy. The question is how to strike a balance between strategic partners without forgetting about ethical heritage.
