Tamil Nadu Clears First Jallikattu of 2026 at Thatchankurichi

Official Nod Opens the 2026 Season

The Tamil Nadu government has granted permission for the first Jallikattu event of 2026 to be held on 3 January at Thatchankurichi village in Pudukkottai district . The approval, issued via a government gazette, formally marks the start of the annual bull-taming season—an event of deep cultural resonance in the state.

Legal Basis and Conditions

The permission was notified by the Animal Husbandry, Dairying, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 , as amended by the Tamil Nadu Amendment Act, 2017 . The order mandates strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) framed by the state and the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, covering animal welfare, event conduct, and oversight.

Safety, Monitoring, and Administration

District authorities have been directed to enforce comprehensive safety measures, including crowd control, emergency medical response, and disaster preparedness. To ensure transparency and effective monitoring, organisers must submit applications exclusively through the designated online portal; manual submissions are not permitted. The administration will also coordinate inter-departmental teams for on-ground supervision.

Thatchankurichi’s Cultural Place

Thatchankurichi traditionally hosts the season’s opening Jallikattu, lending it special significance in Tamil Nadu’s cultural calendar. The wider Pudukkottai region is notable for having a high concentration of vaadivaasals —the controlled entry points for bulls—reflecting the area’s longstanding association with the sport.

Participation Trends and Readiness

Recent editions underline the scale of the event. In 2025, about 600 bulls and 350 tamers participated, with over 4,500 spectators and limited injuries. Organisers are now intensifying preparations for 2026, focusing on enhanced safety protocols, spectator management, and coordination to ensure a smooth, incident-free event.
