Japan’s LDP Secures Supermajority, Strengthening Takaichi’s Policy Agenda
Japan’s Sanae Takaichi has been formally reappointed as Prime Minister following a decisive victory in snap lower house elections conducted on February 8. The 64-year-old leader, who assumed office in October as Japan’s first female premier, led the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to a commanding two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives. The result consolidates her authority in the more influential chamber of the National Diet and provides strong legislative backing for her administration.
Supermajority and Legislative Advantage
The LDP’s two-thirds control of the 465-seat lower house significantly enhances the government’s policy-making capacity. A supermajority allows the ruling coalition to dominate parliamentary committees and override legislation rejected by the upper house, where it lacks numerical strength. This advantage reduces procedural constraints and strengthens the executive’s ability to push through priority reforms.
Defence Policy and Constitutional Debate
Takaichi has reiterated commitments to expand Japan’s defence capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges. Her agenda includes increased military spending, enhanced deterrence strategies and a broader role for Japan’s defence industry, including arms exports. She continues to advocate revision of Japan’s pacifist Constitution, particularly Article 9, though economic pressures and domestic welfare concerns may shape the pace of reform.
China, Taiwan and Diplomatic Sensitivities
The Prime Minister has adopted a firm posture on China-related security issues, including statements on Taiwan’s stability. These positions have drawn international attention given East Asia’s strategic volatility. Takaichi has also indicated potential visits to Yasukuni Shrine, a matter that often generates diplomatic reactions from neighbouring countries due to historical considerations.
