On 2 ndd September, Semicon India 2025 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, an important move toward India becoming a global semiconductor hub. The semiconductor journey has attracted international attention with more than 20,750 attendees (2,500 representing 48 countries) taking part in the three-day semiconductor event (2-4 September).
Focus of the Conference
The focus of the event was to have a strong and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem. Discussions covered:
- Semiconductor fabrication and high-technology packaging.
- The use of AI and intelligent production.
- R&D and innovation
- Investment and policy implementation on the state level.
- Global partnerships to empower the industry.
Modi's Vision
The speech of PM Modi emphasized the desire of India to become a semiconductor design and manufacturing hub and a technology design hub. He defined this step as the 'Perform' step of the national initiative, the previous step being the Reform and Transform step with a focus on the implementation of large scale projects.
Projects and Infrastructure.
- Four new semiconductor plants were sanctioned concentrating on packaging, silicon carbide, discrete semiconductors and 3D glass technology.
- The plant of Micron (accepted 2023) is almost ready.
- Key fab projects being done at Dholera and Sanand (Gujarat) and Jagi Road (Assam).
- New logistics upgrades and training programmes are being created to serve the growing ecosystem.
Policy Support
- PLI Scheme - to increase the involvement of MSMEs and enhance supply chains.
- DLI Scheme - to encourage indigenous design and IP production.
The government is promoting startup and collaboration by the private sector.
International Participation
Semicon India 2025 had six country round tables, global technology leaders and international pavilions. Special startup areas and job training programs emphasized how innovation and talented workers can be used to propel the industry.
Semicon India Platform Development.
Semicon India has since its opening in 2022 become a flagship global platform. The earlier editions have taken place in Bengaluru (2022), Gandhinagar (2023), and Greater Noida (2024). The 2025 edition enhances the increasing role of India in the world semiconductor supply chain.
