India Tests Indigenous Long-Range Guided Rocket
India’s indigenous artillery capability received a major boost with the successful maiden flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120) . Conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha , the trial demonstrated extended range, precision guidance, and operational reliability, marking a critical milestone in the Indian Army’s rocket artillery modernisation programme.
Successful Validation at Maximum Range
During the test, the rocket was fired to its full designed range of 120 kilometres . Defence officials confirmed that the system executed all planned in-flight manoeuvres and accurately struck its intended target. Telemetry and impact data validated the rocket’s guidance, navigation, and control systems, with authorities describing the accuracy as meeting “textbook” performance standards.
Technological Upgrade Over Legacy Pinaka
The LRGR-120 is a significant advancement over earlier unguided Pinaka rockets. It incorporates a sophisticated guidance package combining inertial navigation , mid-course guidance updates , and terminal correction mechanisms . This dramatically lowers the circular error probable (CEP), enabling precise strikes on high-value targets such as enemy artillery positions, command nodes, and logistics installations. Notably, the new rocket can be fired from existing Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) platforms, ensuring cost-effective induction without additional launcher requirements.
Strategic Context and Procurement Push
The test coincided with the Defence Acquisition Council’s approval of defence procurement proposals worth nearly ₹79,000 crore , chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh . These approvals include long-range guided ammunition for Pinaka, loitering munitions, lightweight radars, and advanced drone detection systems, reflecting a broader push toward precision and network-centric warfare.
Strengthening Indigenous Firepower
With its extended reach and high accuracy, the Pinaka LRGR-120 enhances India’s stand-off strike and counter-battery capabilities while improving artillery survivability. The system reinforces India’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence and the development of indigenous precision-guided weaponry.
