In a significant boost to India’s multilateral standing, a senior Indian diplomat has been nominated to head a crucial United Nations body dealing with global arms control and disarmament . Historic Nomination by the UN Secretary-General

DB Venkatesh Varma has been nominated by the United Nations Secretary-General to serve as Chair of the Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters for the 2026–27 term .

This marks the first time since the Board’s establishment in 1978 that an Indian national will chair the body. Although Indian diplomats have previously served as members, the leadership role had remained out of India’s reach until now, making the nomination a landmark moment in India’s UN engagement.

Profile of DB Venkatesh Varma

A career diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service (1988–2021) , Varma is widely recognised for his expertise in disarmament affairs and Russia-related strategic issues .

During his tenure at the Prime Minister’s Office, he was closely involved in negotiations surrounding the India–US civil nuclear agreement , a cornerstone of India’s global nuclear engagement. He later served as India’s Ambassador to Russia , steering bilateral relations through a complex phase marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and evolving geopolitical alignments.

Role and Mandate of the Advisory Board

The Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters was created following the Tenth Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Disarmament . Its primary function is to advise the UN Secretary-General on arms limitation, arms control, and disarmament issues.

The Board also acts as the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and provides guidance on the implementation of the UN Disarmament Information Programme , ensuring informed global dialogue on weapons reduction.
