India Unveils Ambedkar Bust at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris
India celebrated Constitution Day with a historic cultural milestone as a bust of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was formally unveiled at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris . The event honoured Ambedkar’s global relevance as a social reformer, jurist, economist, and primary architect of the Indian Constitution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the installation, describing it as a fitting international tribute to a thinker who transformed India’s democratic framework.
The ceremony was organised by the Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO and attended by ambassadors, UNESCO dignitaries, and members of the Indian diaspora. The unveiling was led by Vishal V Sharma , India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, who emphasised the importance of acknowledging Ambedkar’s contributions beyond national boundaries.
Messages of Tribute & Constitutional Significance
In a message dedicated to the occasion, Prime Minister Modi lauded Ambedkar’s legacy of social equality, justice, and democratic empowerment , noting that his ideas continue to influence human-rights movements worldwide. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also shared a video message, calling Ambedkar a global visionary whose intellectual influence transcends time and geography.
UNESCO as a Platform for Ambedkar’s Vision
Ambassador Sharma highlighted that Ambedkar’s advocacy for education, inclusive governance, and dignity for marginalized communities aligns closely with UNESCO’s foundational goals. The event also reinforced the significance of the Constitution adopted on November 26, 1949 , and enacted on January 26, 1950 , underscoring its enduring role in shaping India’s democratic evolution.
