The Institute of Economics and Peace has released the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 , which determines how nations are performing concerning aspects of peace, governance, social trust and security. The report presents a rather balanced picture as, on the one hand, certain countries are still building stronger stability; on the other hand, some countries face internal and regional issues.
Global Leaders in Peace
- Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world and this is its 18th year in a row with low rate of crime, little militarisation and high rates of trust within the community.
- Ireland (2nd) has moved out of conflict to stability with welfare policy, the lowering of inequality, and a neutral military policy.
- New Zealand (3rd) improved in the rankings, aided by tough gun laws, fewer threats of terror and solid community relationships.
- Austria (4th) and Switzerland (5th) are stable with the benefits of good governance and low crime.
- The only Asian country to feature in the top 10 is Singapore (6th) , owing to its strict enforcement of laws and effective administration.
- Portugal (7th), Denmark (8th), Slovenia (9th), and Finland (10th) are all exceptional in the area of social harmony, welfare system and equality.
India's Ranking
In 2025, India is ranked number 115 . The ranking of the country indicates the existence of the problems:
- Ongoing regional disputes.
- Rising urban crime.
- Domestic social and political conflicts.
Despite the high level of cultural and social diversity in India, these issues still burden the peace index score of the country.
Key Takeaway
The GPI 2025 demonstrates that some countries, such as Iceland, Ireland and New Zealand are exemplars of peace and governance, but others, such as India and others, have urgent challenges. Developing trust, inequality, and insecurity concerns are the priority in enhancing international peace.
