India and Pakistan experienced two opposite sporting stories within the same weekend one in the cricket field and the other in athletics. As the young Indian cricket team subdued the Pakistani team in the Asia Cup Super 4s, the country Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra suffered his first off-day at the Tokyo world athletics championships.
India Crushes Pakistan in Asian Cup Super 4s.
Daniyan Kaneria, a former Pakistani spinner, did not hold back when Pakistan lost to India by six wickets revealing that it was a maha dhulai or a complete drubbing. After his fifty, he mocked the celebratory gesture of an opener, Sahibzada Farhan, who fired an AK-47, but it was what he called the India response, the BrahMos missile response, of the openers, Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.
In pursuit of 172, India shredded the bowling of Pakistan with a spectacular 105 run opening in 10 overs. Abhishek hit 74 out of 39 deliveries and Gill hit 47 out of 28, and the chase was reduced to a mere formality. Kaneria had reasoned that at this level of firepower, even a target of 200 would not have been enough. He also rejected any discussion on the dismissal of Fakhar Zaman blaming Sanju Samson on making a clean catch and blaming Pakistan on seeking excuses rather than accepting defeat.
Neeraj Chopra Places 8 th in Javelin Final.
Indian athletics was having a sobering evening in sharp contrast with the dominance of cricket. Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra ended up with a dismal eighth place in the men javelin final with a record of 84.03 meters. New participant Sachin Yadav of his team also showed consistency with a throw of 86.27m and 85.96m to take fourth place.
It was awarded to Trinidad and Tobago Keshorn Walcott who had produced a season best of 88.16m. The silver was won by Grenada with Anderson Peters (87.38m), and the United States won bronze (86.67m) with Curtis Thompson, who had not won a medal in a long time. The contest was difficult due to rainy weather and also Pakistan Arshad Nadeem failed to perform and bowed out in three rounds.
A Tale of Two Outcomes
The weekend was a marked weekend in the mixed fortunes of India in sporting activities as the young talents of the Indian cricket team, in their batting, peppered their arch-rival with fearless attacks and as was revealed in the sporting arena; athletics, it was a reminder that there is still a fierce competition in the world. In the case of Sachin Yadav, his fourth place position at his first world final was a good sign, and Chopra will seek to rebound before the next international events.
