Pakistan–Turkiye Defence Ties Strengthen with Induction of PNS Khaibar

Pakistan has commissioned PNS Khaibar , its second MILGEM-class corvette built in collaboration with Turkiye, marking an important step in the modernisation of the Pakistan Navy. The induction underscores deepening bilateral defence cooperation between Islamabad and Ankara, particularly in naval shipbuilding, technology transfer, and long-term strategic partnership.

Commissioning Ceremony in Istanbul

The commissioning ceremony took place at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard , highlighting Turkiye’s central role in the project. Pakistan’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Naveed Ashraf , attended the event, reflecting the high-level political and military significance attached to the programme. Senior Turkish defence officials were also present, underlining the importance both countries place on expanding defence-industrial collaboration.

Capabilities of PNS Khaibar

PNS Khaibar is a multipurpose MILGEM-class corvette equipped with modern combat management systems, advanced sensors, and a robust weapons suite. The vessel is designed to perform a wide range of roles, including maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, and maritime security operations . According to the Pakistan Navy, the ship represents one of the most technologically advanced surface combatants in its fleet, significantly enhancing operational flexibility and situational awareness.

MILGEM Programme and Technology Transfer

The MILGEM (Milli Gemi) programme is Turkiye’s indigenous warship initiative aimed at producing modern corvettes and frigates. Pakistan signed a contract in July 2018 with Turkish defence firm ASFAT for the construction of four corvettes. Under the agreement, two ships are being built in Turkiye and two in Pakistan , facilitating technology transfer and strengthening Pakistan’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
