12th Samvad Conclave Opens in Jamshedpur with Traditional Tribal Rituals

The 12th edition of the Samvad Conclave commenced in Jamshedpur with vibrant tribal rituals, reaffirming India’s deep-rooted indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage. Supported by the Tata Steel Foundation , the annual gathering provides a unique platform for tribal communities, knowledge-keepers, artists and youth to celebrate identity, resilience and ecological wisdom.

Traditional Ceremonies Mark a Sacred Beginning

The opening ceremony featured prayers and ritual performances from the Ho, Munda, Santhal and Oraon tribes. Traditional instruments—including the Bhner, Sakua and Nagada—accompanied the invocation. A ceremonial cleansing of the Akhra , performed according to Ho customs, symbolised purity, togetherness and respect for ancestral traditions. Elders were honoured with Jawa saplings , emphasising both cultural symbolism and environmental stewardship.

A Celebration of Tribal Art Forms Across India

This year’s conclave showcases 34 tribal art forms representing 18 states and 30 tribes , making it one of the largest platforms for indigenous cultural expression. The venue at Gopal Maidan hosts 51 stalls displaying handicrafts, paintings, performance traditions, healing practices and oral histories. Live demonstrations offer visitors an immersive experience of India’s tribal diversity, showcasing both continuity and innovation within age-old traditions.

Dialogue, Knowledge Exchange and Community Leadership

Samvad remains rooted in community-led participation. Tribal performers, healers, artisans and changemakers engage in discussions on culture, sustainability, livelihoods and identity. The conclave encourages intergenerational dialogue and strengthens cultural pride among younger tribal communities. Supported by Tata Steel Foundation, it promotes inclusive development grounded in traditional ecological knowledge.
