Bihar Enters the Supercomputing Era
In a significant boost to advanced research and high-performance computing, Bihar’s first supercomputer, Param Rudra , has been inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna . The facility marks a historic milestone, making IIT-Patna the first institution in the state to host a supercomputing system. The inauguration was carried out by Amitesh Kumar Sinha , Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) .
Part of the National Supercomputing Mission
Param Rudra has been set up under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) , a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at building world-class computational infrastructure and indigenous capabilities. Under NSM, 37 supercomputers have already been deployed across the country with a cumulative capacity of 39 petaFLOPS , supporting over 12,000 researchers . With 10 more systems planned , India’s total computing power is expected to cross 100 petaFLOPS in the next phase.
Transforming Research and Academics in Eastern India
According to IIT-Patna Director T N Singh , the supercomputer is expected to bring transformative change to Bihar and neighbouring states. The facility will support around 60 faculty members and nearly 400 students across 10 academic departments . Research areas set to benefit include computational astrobiology, advanced material design, molecular electronics, fluid mechanics, nano-bio interfaces, artificial intelligence, data science, and quantum computing .
Building an Indigenous HPC Ecosystem
MeitY officials highlighted that NSM goes beyond hardware deployment. It focuses on developing indigenous high-performance computing technologies , including processors, servers, cooling systems, interconnects and software platforms. The Param Rudra system at IIT-Patna is expected to accelerate local innovation, reduce dependence on external computing facilities, and strengthen India’s domestic supercomputing ecosystem.
