Assam Visit Highlights Centre’s Push for Northeast Infrastructure Growth
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to undertake a two-day visit to Assam from December 20 , during which he will inaugurate and dedicate several major infrastructure and development projects. The visit reflects the Centre’s continued emphasis on strengthening connectivity, industrial capacity, and public infrastructure in the Northeast, with Guwahati positioned as a regional growth hub .
New Guwahati Airport Terminal
A key highlight will be the inauguration of the new terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on December 20. Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹4,000 crore , the terminal features modern architecture and upgraded passenger amenities. The Prime Minister will also unveil an 80-foot statue of Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi , Assam’s first Chief Minister, at the airport complex, honouring his contribution to the state’s political legacy.
Urban Connectivity and Political Engagement
During the visit, plans for an elevated corridor on the airport road will be advanced to improve connectivity between the airport and Jalukbari , easing traffic congestion and enhancing urban mobility. PM Modi will also interact with BJP party workers at the state office in Guwahati, marking an important organisational engagement.
Riverfront Visit and Student Interaction
On December 21 , the Prime Minister will visit the Brahmaputra river terminal in Guwahati and board the Charaideo vessel . He will participate in the ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ interaction with selected students and later pay homage to the 855 martyrs of the Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak, Boragaon , acknowledging the state’s historic democratic struggle.
Namrup-IV Fertiliser Project
The visit will conclude in Dibrugarh , where PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of the Namrup-IV Ammonia-Urea project at the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited . The ₹10,000 crore brownfield project will produce 12 lakh metric tonnes of urea annually , strengthening fertiliser self-reliance and catalysing industrial growth in Assam.
