India Pushes G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Plan and Satellite Data Sharing
India has strengthened its global sustainability agenda by urging G20 nations to adopt a unified strategy for critical mineral management and satellite data sharing. During a high-level session on resilience, climate action and energy transitions at the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined two major proposals aimed at addressing long-term environmental, technological and developmental challenges.
India’s Call for a Critical Minerals Circularity Framework
Recognising the rising global demand for lithium, cobalt, nickel and other essential minerals, India proposed a G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative . The framework promotes recycling, urban mining and the reuse of battery materials to reduce pressure on primary mineral extraction. According to India, strengthening circularity can fortify international supply chains, cut emissions and support the transition to clean technologies such as electric mobility and renewable storage systems. The initiative also encourages cooperation among G20 economies to ensure stable, ethical and environmentally responsible mineral sourcing.
Proposal for a G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership
India further presented a G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership , calling for improved access to space-based information for developing nations. The proposal seeks to make data from G20 space agencies more openly available to support agriculture, fisheries, climate monitoring, and disaster response. By democratising satellite data, India aims to bridge technological gaps and equip the Global South with tools necessary for science-based resilience planning.
Development Priorities and Global Cooperation
India also stressed concerns surrounding climate-related food insecurity and showcased its initiatives promoting millets, large-scale food safety programmes and climate-resilient agriculture. The country highlighted the need for globally aligned responses to disaster risks, health emergencies and emerging threats such as the drug–terror nexus.
