Norwegian Film Safe House Wins ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal

Norwegian Film Safe House Wins ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal at IFFI 2025

Norwegian drama Safe House , set amid the 2013 civil conflict in the Central African Republic, has been honoured with the ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal , an international award that recognises films advocating peace, non-violence and universal compassion. The recognition places the film among key global works that highlight humanitarian ethics through cinematic storytelling.

A Narrative Defined by Conflict, Care and Moral Courage

The film unfolds within a Doctors Without Borders medical facility in Bangui , capturing a 15-hour window of extreme tension as aid workers struggle to save lives under fire. Through its powerful narrative, Safe House explores themes of duty, sacrifice and ethical responsibility when human life becomes fragile. The portrayal of medical personnel working without certainty of survival struck a deep chord with the jury.

Jury Appreciation for Craft and Performance

The international jury praised the film’s contained yet emotionally charged approach to war-time storytelling, noting its ability to convey intensity without unnecessary spectacle. Kristine Kujath Thorp’s lead performance received special appreciation for its depth and ability to carry the emotional weight of the narrative. The film’s universality and humanistic tone were key factors in its final selection.

Award Presentation and Institutional Significance

The award was received on behalf of filmmaker Eirik Svensson by ICFT–UNESCO representative Manouj Kadaamh during the ceremony. Presented by NFDC, the Gandhi Medal is jointly conferred by ICFT and UNESCO to cinema that strengthens dialogue, peace and mutual respect between cultures.
