Gadkari Calls for Urgent Phase-Out of Old Diesel Vehicles at Auto Summit 2025
At the Zee Media Auto Summit 2025, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari issued a strong appeal for eliminating old diesel and petrol vehicles to curb rising pollution and reduce India’s costly fuel imports. He stressed that ageing commercial vehicles are among the biggest contributors to toxic emissions in urban centres.
Older Vehicles Pose High Emission Risks
Gadkari highlighted that a single outdated diesel truck can emit pollutants equivalent to three modern trucks that meet current emission norms. While affirming that Delhi NCR’s 10–15 year scrappage rules fall under State authority, he underlined that phasing out older vehicles aligns with national environmental and public health priorities.
Warning on Delhi’s Pollution Crisis
Expressing personal concern, the Minister described Delhi’s air quality as “life-shortening,” noting that he avoids prolonged stays in the capital due to severe pollution. He urged citizens to understand the dangers of continued dependence on ageing diesel fleets and stressed the need for cleaner mobility alternatives.
Push for EVs, CNG and Cleaner Fuels
Gadkari reiterated that electric vehicles offer far lower running costs compared to diesel models, making them both economical and eco-friendly. He encouraged motorists to switch to CNG where feasible, citing significant savings and reduced emissions.
Flex-Engine Vehicles to Boost Clean Mobility
The Minister announced that India is rolling out flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on ethanol blends. He said ethanol, being domestically produced and farmer-friendly, can lower fuel imports while also reducing pollution. He added that isobutanol , derived from ethanol, is being explored as a cleaner substitute for diesel.
